Histology Epithelia Part 1

 1. Simple Squamous Epithelium:  Features: - Height is much smaller than width. - Disc shaped central nuclei. - Single layer of flat cells. - Reduces friction by providing smooth surface and helps in rapid transportation. - Helps in passage of material by diffusion or filtration.  Examples: -Endothelium: Heart, Blood Vessels and Lymphatics -Mesothelium: Pericardium and Pleura Peritoneum -Others: Alveoli of Lungs and Glomeruli in Kidney etc.  2. Simple Cuboidal Epithelium: Features: - Height and width are equal in length. - Single layer cube like cells. - Helps in secretion, absorption and excretion.  Locations: -Secretory portions of glands like thyroid or mammary or salivary.  -Proximal Convulated Tubules of the Kidney. 3. Simple Columnar Epithelium: Features:  - Heights are much smaller than width. - Oval nucleus elongated towards base (not touching the base though). - Helps in absorption or mucus secretion in all digestive tracts (stomach or intestine) Location:  -Uterus  -Gall Blad
