Histology Epithelia Part 1

 1. Simple Squamous Epithelium:

Features:

- Height is much smaller than width.
- Disc shaped central nuclei.
- Single layer of flat cells.
- Reduces friction by providing smooth surface and helps in rapid transportation.
- Helps in passage of material by diffusion or filtration.

Examples:

-Endothelium: Heart, Blood Vessels and Lymphatics
-Mesothelium: Pericardium and Pleura Peritoneum
-Others: Alveoli of Lungs and Glomeruli in Kidney etc.

2. Simple Cuboidal Epithelium:

Features:

- Height and width are equal in length.
- Single layer cube like cells.
- Helps in secretion, absorption and excretion.

Locations:

-Secretory portions of glands like thyroid or mammary or salivary.
-Proximal Convulated Tubules of the Kidney.

3. Simple Columnar Epithelium:

Features:

- Heights are much smaller than width.
- Oval nucleus elongated towards base (not touching the base though).
- Helps in absorption or mucus secretion in all digestive tracts (stomach or intestine)

Location:

-Uterus
-Gall Bladder

Simple Columnar Epithelium is of two types:

a)Simple Ciliated Columnar Epithelium:

-On free surface - thread like cilia for motility.

Examples:
-Olfactory mucosa,
-Ventricles of Brain,
-Central of Spinal Cord,
-Inner lining of Uterus Cavity.

b)Simple Columnar Epithelium Microvilli:

-Thin elongations of cell membrane along with cytoplasm.
-Brush Boarder is present which increases surface area.

Examples:
-In Small Intestine,
-In Gall Bladder.

4. Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium:

Features:

- Cells of different heights.
- Nuclei at different levels.
- Helps in secretion and propulation of mucous

Locations:

-Trachea and most of the upper respiratory system.
-Vas deferens and ducts of large glands.
